Do you notice the smell of gas while out in your field or driving down the road? Natural gas is odorized with Mercaptan, giving it a distinctive smell often described as rotten eggs, sulfur, or a skunk-like odor.
If you detect this smell, itβs important to act quickly to ensure safety:
Immediate Actions:

- Evacuate the Area:
- Leave the location immediately, moving upwind or to a safe distance away from the odor.
- In Case of Fire or Immediate Danger:
- Call 911 and report the situation to emergency services.
What NOT to Do During a Suspected Gas Leak:
- Do NOT light matches, candles, or other open flames.
- Do NOT use electrical switches or appliances, including phones, as they can create sparks.
- Do NOT attempt to locate or fix the leak yourself. Leave all inspections and repairs to qualified personnel.
- Do NOT start vehicles or equipment near the suspected leak.

- Stay Alert to Warning Signs:
- Hissing or blowing sounds may indicate a gas leak.
- Unusual bubbles in standing water or discolored vegetation near pipelines can also be warning signs.
